Biologic Dentistry:

Dr. Nupponen is a member of the Holistic Dental Society (HDS), the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), and the National Center of Homeopathy (NCH).  He feels intensely that one’s overall health is very much related to proper nutrition and the health of one’s mouth. His primary interest is in the health and well-being of his patients. He is very concerned about the issue of mercury toxicity in dental amalgams. Scientific studies on this issue have been somewhat contradictory, depending on who is doing the research, but some countries now prohibit the use of mercury amalgams in dentistry. Dr. Nupponen stopped placing mercury amalgam restorations in 1993. Instead, he places "white fillings", composite restorations which are laser bonded to the teeth. The substance has physical properties very similar to those of natural teeth, resulting in restored teeth which are much stronger than teeth restored with mercury amalgams.

Abiding by ADA guidelines, Dr. Nupponen is not trying to influence patients to remove existing mercury amalgam fillings unless those fillings are noticeably in need of replacement. However, people are varied in their reactions to foreign substances, and they can have mercury amalgam fillings removed if they so desire. Dr. Nupponen has invested in a mercury vapor analysis machine for use by patients who are concerned about this issue. He also has a potentiometer and uses special methods to prevent exposure to mercury vapor during the removal of old mercury amalgams. The Halifax Center for Holistic & Cosmetic Dentistry is one of the few dental offices in the country where these services are available.
